Malta has reported a sharp rise in income tax revenue, with Finance Minister Clyde Caruana revealing that €650 million more was collected last year compared to the previous year. According to the minister, €400 million of that increase is the result of deploying Artificial Intelligence technology to tackle tax evasion.
In a national TV interview, Caruana explained how the AI system has enhanced the government’s ability to identify potential tax evaders—both individuals and businesses—before they can exploit loopholes. He described the system as a tool to make tax collection more effective and targeted.
Caruana said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to improve compliance and ensure that due taxes are collected efficiently.
