With 99 countries now live or in transition to e-invoicing mandates ,and all 27 EU member states preparing to align under ViDA, the global move to digital tax compliance is transforming the way organizations exchange and process invoices. In this environment, sharedserviceslink sat down with Pete Hantman, CEO of Tungsten Automation, for an unfiltered conversation about leadership, innovation, and the company’s role in the e-invoicing future.
In the interview, Hantman discusses Tungsten Automation’s vision, its strategic partnership with Sovos, and how the company is balancing AI innovation with responsible growth.
Tungsten Automation, formerly Kofax, has become one of the most established names in global AP and AR automation — serving enterprises that collectively process over 500 million invoices per year, worth more than $4 trillion in value.
A Partnership for Global Reach and Compliance
Tungsten’s partnership with Sovos, the global leader in tax compliance, marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of e-invoicing and automation services.
“We’ve been working with Sovos for ten years,” Hantman explained the partnership allows us to offer customers a “seamless experience - a one-stop shop” for tax compliance and invoice automation.
Hantman added that customers benefit from a single point of accountability, even across the combined ecosystem:
“Customers don't have to swivel chair from a support perspective and go from one to the other. From a back-office perspective, we've created a consolidated single deployment capability and a consolidated single-support methodology. So today's technology exists that we can share across two support organizations all of the data necessary to provide a seamless support experience.”
Responsible AI and Product Innovation
With the recent launch of TAP (Tungsten AI Platform), Tungsten Automation is investing heavily in research and development to accelerate its roadmap.
“As I look at next year, we’re establishing budgets now, like most companies. We’re maintaining, if not increasing, the percentage of revenue invested in R&D, despite achieving 20–30% productivity gains in that area. I really believe that to stay ahead in this market and continue receiving the industry recognition we have, you need to commit to those kinds of innovative roadmaps.
E-Invoicing Evolution and Modernization
The discussion also covered the modernization of the Tungsten Network, one of the most established e-invoicing infrastructures in the world.
“Our strategy isn’t just to bring customers onto the network, it’s to meet their needs as they navigate a complex global environment of tax and invoicing mandates,” said Hantman. “The future isn’t closed networks. Interoperability is essential, and we’re embracing it.”
“We’re investing heavily to modernize the portfolio and deliver a world-class experience, while keeping the reliability and scale that global enterprises depend on.”
