The Director General of the Income and Sales Tax Department (ISTD), Dr. Hussam Abu Ali, described Jordan’s National Electronic Invoicing System as a “fundamental” reform step in the development of the country’s financial and economic policy.

Speaking during a dialogue session titled “The National Electronic Invoicing System, Concepts, and Challenges,” Abu Ali said the system is “a national and legislative necessity” designed to control and regulate the economy, enhance tax justice, and achieve transparency in financial transactions.

He revealed that more than 140,000 taxpayers have already registered in the system, reflecting what he called the private sector’s “growing awareness of its importance.” He added that the ISTD’s website now enables users to inquire about all registered taxpayers.

Highlighting the platform’s performance, Abu Ali said the e-billing system has proven “its effectiveness,” with 1.2 million invoices issued per day and an average transaction time of just half a second. This, he noted, demonstrates both the “strength” of the system’s infrastructure and the competence of its staff.

The system, which integrates security and information protection measures comparable to global standards, was first piloted with selected establishments and companies before its official launch. “The system is simple and user-friendly and has proven its ability to accommodate all accounting systems used by various sectors and adapt to these systems without requiring any changes,” Abu Ali added.

He further emphasized that the ISTD has become a “fully digital” department, offering more than 65 electronic services to taxpayers. Beyond digitization, the department has also introduced artificial intelligence into tax auditing, which Abu Ali said has “improved audit efficiency and uncovered evasion cases.”
