OpenPeppol has released the EU PINT Billing v1.0.0 specification, marking a step forward in cross-border e-invoicing for European companies. The specification is optional for immediate use and does not replace the Peppol BIS3 Billing standard, which will remain mandatory in Belgium starting January 2026.
While BIS3 Billing continues to be the required format for EU e-invoicing, the PINT specification is expected to become the standard document as Europe moves toward ViDA (VAT in the Digital Age) and broader global interoperability.
The PINT specialization allows EU companies to bill customers in countries that have implemented their own PINT specializations, including Australia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Singapore. Cross-border exchange is possible when the recipient has registered a PINT receiving capability via the Peppol directory.
EU PINT Billing v1.0.0 complies with the European e-invoicing standard EN 16931. It implements the Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 as a PINT-compliant specification for invoices and credit notes and is classified as a Core Invoice Usage Specification (CIUS) under EN 16931-1:2017. Any invoice following this specification is fully conformant with EN 16931, ensuring alignment with the European semantic data model for electronic invoices.
