Taiwan Joins Peppol, Marking New Chapter in Cross-Border Digital Trade
Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Development (Moda) has officially joined Peppol, marking a significant step in advancing Taiwan’s role in international digital cross-border trade.
Taiwan’s participation is considered strategically important. In addition to most EU countries, several key trading partners including Australia, Singapore, Japan, New Zealand, and Malaysia are already Peppol members. This alignment is expected to make cross-border digital transactions faster and more efficient. A survey of Australian service providers found that using Peppol can reduce costs by up to 80% compared to traditional paper-based or EDI methods.
The initiative was jointly promoted by the Ministry of Digital Development, the Ministry of Data Protection (Taiwan), the Office of Economic and Trade Negotiations (Taiwan), the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs (Taiwan) Department of Foreign Trade.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Digital Development will develop localized Peppol technology and application specifications to meet domestic requirements and ensure security compliance. It will also support domestic service providers in applying for OpenPeppol certification and encourage businesses to adopt the Peppol platform. These efforts aim to accelerate digital transformation, strengthen Taiwan’s position in global trade, and capture new opportunities in the digital economy.
