Avalara has announced the launch of a cost-free e-invoicing solution for U.S. companies, marking a significant move toward modernizing the country’s fragmented invoicing landscape.

The company’s E-Invoicing & Live Reporting (ELR) solution is enabled through Digital Business Networks Alliance (DBNAlliance), and is designed to help businesses streamline compliance, reduce risk, and automate their accounts payable processes.

“In contrast to many countries where electronic invoicing is mandated and standardized by country tax authorities, the U.S. lacks a cohesive regulatory framework, resulting in fragmented e-invoicing adoption and limited interoperability that only works best for the biggest enterprises,” the company said in a statement.

Because of this lack of standardization, most U.S. businesses continue to rely on paper or PDF invoices and manual processes, costing them an estimated $15.16 per invoice, according to a recent Avalara study. The same study found that full e-invoicing adoption could generate more than $116 billion for the economy, with 83% of those gains coming from small and medium-sized businesses.

Avalara is now making enterprise-grade e-invoicing available to U.S. businesses for free through its certified DBNAlliance access point. The aim is to bring a scalable, standards-based solution to a historically disconnected market and offer cost relief to millions of companies.

“Avalara is proud to lead the charge in bringing trusted, innovative solutions to the U.S. e-invoicing landscape,” said Alex Baulf, VP, E-Invoicing and Live Reporting at Avalara. “The DBNAlliance activates an open, interoperable exchange model already proven outside the U.S. and Avalara is making this market-leading commitment to ensure all U.S. businesses can take advantage of it.”

Avalara’s ELR solution offers global compliance and coverage through a single, unified application and a global partner ecosystem. According to the company, key benefits include:

  • End-to-End Compliance: Automated invoice creation, validation, and submission to meet evolving U.S. and global tax requirements.
  • Seamless Connectivity: Integration with the DBNAlliance network to enable real-time, interoperable e-invoicing with trading partners across the U.S. using a certified service provider.
  • Business Efficiency: Reduced manual processes, lower error rates, and faster invoice processing cycles.
  • Future Readiness: Preparedness for upcoming U.S. federal and state-level e-invoicing mandates.

As a founding member and key technology contributor to the DBNAlliance, Avalara is helping shape the infrastructure that supports interoperable e-invoicing across industries. The company’s leadership in this area builds on its recent recognition in the IDC MarketScape: European Compliant e-Invoicing 2024 Vendor Assessment.
