OpenAI's ChatGPT has released an update which now helps users create realistic image generation. It now has the ability to generate photorealistic images of printed receipts, down to the curled paper edges and Amex card details.

The feature, powered by GPT-4's image generation tools, can recreate what looks like an authentic receipt from any restaurant, complete with itemized orders, tax breakdowns, and payment methods.

A New Tool for Expense Fraud?

Kunal Verma, Co-Founder and CTO at AppZen, says “ChatGPT’s new image generator can now create counterfeit receipts so convincing that both people and systems can’t tell the difference. What makes AI-generated fake receipts so challenging is that both AI–and the people prompting the AI–are becoming more sophisticated.”

What’s Next for Finance Teams

With AI-generated content becoming increasingly indistinguishable from the real thing, finance teams may need to rethink traditional expense review models.

In the meantime, business leaders are being advised to educate employees on policy expectations and invest in detection solutions that can spot AI-generated artifacts.

As technology pushes boundaries, so too must the safeguards that keep businesses honest.
