In February 2026, the EU made key strides in preparing for ViDA digital reporting requirements (DRR), which will become mandatory on 1st July 2030. While the update did not change the core ViDA legislation adopted in 2025, it focused on standards alignment and infrastructure readiness essential for the 2030 rollout.

 EN 16931 E‑Invoicing Standard Update (Feb 2026):

  • On the 13th February 2026, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) approved revisions to the EN 16931‑1 semantic data model, the EU’s core e‑invoice content standard.
  • Updates ensure that e‑invoices across member states are consistent, machine‑readable, and suitable for automated tax reporting.
  • Aligning EN 16931 with ViDA objectives reduces interpretation differences between countries, improving cross-border interoperability.

 DRR Infrastructure:

  • Preparatory work continues for the DRR and the Central VIES database, set to go live in July 2030.
  • Central VIES will:
  • Aggregate transaction-level VAT data from all EU member states
  • Cross-check intra-EU supplies and acquisitions for compliance and fraud detection
  • Integrate with other sources, including customs and future payment reporting systems
  • Consolidate VAT registration data across countries
  • The current VIES search interface will be phased out by 2032.
  • The system supports real-time or near real-time reporting, enhancing EU-wide VAT analytics and compliance checks.

These updates mark a crucial step in readying the EU’s digital VAT infrastructure for structured e‑invoicing and real-time reporting requirements starting in July 2030.
